DIGITAL DUMPSTER DIVING
 
According to an article by Robert L. Scheier, appearing in Computerworld on Monday, December 17, 2007, Dumpster-diving is alive and well in the age of USB flash drives and portable music players.
 
The article warns that every keychain-size flash drive tossed, lost or stolen could leak critical information to a competitor. The report reminds readers that the tens of millions of computers that are disposed of each year in landfills, junkyards and yard sales could be a rich trove of corporate data left there by lazy IT departments.
 
The article also discusses a range of solutions for information destruction on electronic equipment. Unfortunately, while the author does reference that many organizations choose to outsource electronic equipment destruction, he misleads readers into thinking that self-administered wiping programs by untrained personnel are acceptable.
